Kozukumi-san

Kozukumitou

(Kozukumi Island)

Toba City

July 11th

There is a small island, Kozukumi Island, on the east side of Toshi Island, Toba City. High quality abalone can be found here from olden times, however, in order to preserve the resource, fishing is allowed for only 3 hours, one day each year. On the afternoon of July 11, small boats full of ama come back to the port after fishing, all at one time. After this abalone, as well as leaves of mulberry trees and pampas grass from the island, will be offered to Hachiman Shrine, with prayers for maritime safety and a large catch.
